Experience the excitement of Science...

Through the  E³  Program, students in grades 3-4-5 are involved in hands-on science and engineering activities that promote critical thinking, teamwork, and interest in STEM occupations.

On the day of  E³, which will be held on February 20 and 21st , 2020 at Shelby County Instructional Services Center, teams of students will apply their understanding of STEM concepts to solve and design construction challenges.  The 2020  E³ Summer Games challenges will focus on designing a machine to propel a mystery object to a target , completing 3 construction challenges in the triathlon, and coding to navigate a Sphero through a gold-medal floor performance  and provide an element of mystery to truly Engage Elementary Engineers.  The element of mystery is created when students are required to transfer and test their knowledge of STEM content in a new situation with time constraints and mystery materials.  Teams work diligently to compete and showcase their ingenuity without any assistance from teachers, parents, or spectators. After construction, students will test their projects and receive authentic feedback from practicing engineers from Honda and Alabama Power who have an invested interest in STEM education.

TEAM TORCHES
Picture
Each team of athletes will create a torch to carry as they walk into their event.  Requirements for the team torch include team name, school, event, and a free standing torch stand.   Torches will be judged on originality of materials and design. Torches must be student designed and constructed.  Torches will be placed on the team’s torch stand during the event. Good luck and light the way!

What teachers are saying...
"On the spot competitions are exciting and really challenge students to problem solve and think creatively."

"My students actually worked together and for the first time recognized  not only the importance of teamwork, but also the characteristics needed to be a team player."

"On the way to U of M yesterday, Amanda overheard two young gentlemen discussing where they would go to college. One young man was probably not one to have had that discussion before yesterday."

"The campus was beautiful and my students were able to experience engaging STEM activities and get a small taste of campus life."
